Never too late

The world’s most powerful female political leader is ready to call herself a feminist. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, preparing to retire from her role, has previously backed away from the term. Hardly surprising given her job as leader of a centre-right party that enshrines traditional gender roles of mother, homemaker and devout Christian. But Merkel has always made it clear through her actions that she’s a feminist in spirit if not through public declaration. At a public event this week, she explained her past hesitancy and then threw her hat into the fray: “I was a bit shyer when I said it. But it’s more thought-out now. And in that sense, I can say that we should all be feminists.” Who can forget the image of her leaning over the table at the G-7 Summit telling Trump what’s what.
